Meditation: It’s not just for the gurus

The Art of Mediation

Set aside time today for quiet reflection. Take a pad of paper, a writing instrument, and find a quiet place in your residence . Sit with your eyes closed and focus on your thoughts. What is making you happy, what makes you deeply unhappy , and where do you want to be in a year.

When you think about the unhappy places in your life, look for solutions. You will have to change your attitude, or change the situation. But don’t accept the unhappiness. Nobody deserves sorrow.

Now focus on the positive. What is it that brings your joy during your day. What can do to expand and enhance that enjoyment.

Think about where you want to be a year from now. What will your day look like. What relationships do you need to create. What do you have to learn to get there. Can you learn it online, or at a bookstore. Do you already have a book on the topic that you are not using. What is the one thing you can do this coming week to make progress towards where you want to be next year at this top. Remember that 52 weeks is a short period of time.

Think about these three things deeply, and with your eyes closed. Then open your eyes and start writing about these three areas. Be sure to date the page so you know when your mind had these thoughts.

When you are done writing, close your eyes again and things of the things you are lucky to have. Work with the basics: A roof over your head, food in your refrigerator, perhaps a loving life partner, and kids that are not in jail. Expand from there.

Meditation works wonders. It is not just for the gurus
