Is there a social media rebellion in the works?

    Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

I read this great article last week about how people are popping a (virtual) cap in their own social media heads. Specifically it proposes the idea of going on hiatus every now and then – maybe a weekend here and there.  The entire point is brought home with this last paragraph. I have kept this in my draft email box all week and read it over and over. It is just a thought I really enjoy to absorb, and something that those of us that are extremely well connected online need to take to heart:

“As a communications tool and feedback loop, social media is a powerful thing. But as a time-waster, it has lifted the art of spending endless hours on nothing you can recall later as being useful or important to an entirely new level. Yes, I’ll be tweeting away next year. But hopefully, less prolifically. Like Helliker’s brother Keith, I find talking to people so much more rewarding than tweeting at them.”

Please take a look and let me know what you think in the comments below.

Video: Rex Barrett / Project OKC 2010

    Saturday, December 26th, 2009

Tuesday night I was lucky enough to hang out with a friend of mine Rex Barrett from RexBarret.us . If you are not familiar with the outstanding work he does with Project OKC check out our FIRST video with him. In this session we share some thoughts on what is coming up for Project OKC in 2010, my realistic attitude, and why in the end it (meaning Twitter) does not matter. We also get a guest appearance from James Harber of Studio FJ fame and the bling master himself Dan Gordon from Samuel Gordon Jewelers. Check us out in our tacky sweaters at the Iguana Lounge Tacky Sweater Taco Tuesday (Dan got left out in the final edit but I promise he was there) :

Do you network “on purpose” ?

    Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

How often do you make a conscious effort to network “on purpose” ? Not just the casual “hey how are doing” but more of the “Hi my name is Patrick Allmond. What do you do? This is what I do. Let’s stay in touch. Is there anything I can help you with? (Note – if you do this don’t say your name is Patrick Allmond. That would just be awkward).

You really should start doing this if you want to help yourself and help other people. It is one of those things that seems so obvious – yet so many people miss the boat on this one. I know that I have asked at least five good friends recently “What do you want to do in life… What do you really want to do?”. That is the whole point of networking after all isn’t it?

Update: Now that we have a forum area please feel free to explore this topic deeper the StopDoingNothing Forums

And speaking of real world networking I finally got to hear the lovely voice of a cool lady in Claremore, Oklahoma today. Nicole Nascenzi called me for a phone interview about Twitter and the interruptions that Social Media can cause you in life. On a humorous note – she got my response for the interview while checking Twitter while stopped at a red light. Double humor for the fact that I called her back and we conducted the interview over the phone while I was driving home from a client appointment. She is the Public Relations Coordinator for Rogers State University in Claremore, Oklahoma. If you want to be smarter and hear from someone on the front lines of Social Media education you can follow her on Twitter

Video: I love to network, but relax Twitter fanboys!

    Monday, December 21st, 2009

It is really amazing to see all of the hype over “social networking/social media”. I do a lot of work in this area and one of the things I always try to do is look at things very realistically.

The tools people are calling “social media” are just simple communication tools. And some of them are not that good. But they do allow us to connect and communicate. We really need to relax on the hype, and get down to creating powerful business and personal relationships.

Sometimes my frustration vents out in different ways and people think I am a Social Media hater. This video will hopefully clarify my opinion. Mad props out to rexbarrett.us and rbbruce.com

    Have a great week!

Would you like to learn from my mistakes/my free gift?

    Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

I was having a conversation with some pretty smart people on twitter this afternoon when the topic of learning from mistakes came up. The three of us heartily agreed on two things:

1 – We should all be pretty smart from the number of mistakes we have made
2 – The absolute best way to learn is from mistakes and really huge screw ups

I made the leap of faith to break out on my own from IBM Global Services about 11 years ago. As great a company as it was I was very bored. And when I get bored I get into trouble. I wanted to do something else outside of general tech support with the exact same people for the next 20 years of my life. IBM offered all kinds of moving options, but the quality of life in Oklahoma City is great. We were in the middle of raising a brilliant daughter and I did not want to screw that up by up and moving her across the country.

So here I sit 11 years later looking back on that first week of November in 1998 when I jumped in the deep end of the pool. I made a huge number of mistakes – starting from the first time I hit the road. I’ve got all of these mistakes floating around in the cells of my brain. And I get calls and meetings every week from people wanting to pick my brain about these mistakes. But it occurred to me that these would be really good to share with people that are considering breaking out on their own, or who have also made the leap of faith.

So my question to you, my friend, is would you be interested in a free hour of my time every week (via Ustream, etc) of picking my brain (and the brains of others who have tripped over themselves like me) ? I’d schedule something about 10 or 11 (CT) every Friday morning. People could join via chat, and I’d find a way for people to dial in via phone. Any topic is up for grabs. I’d also bring in guests since I have not made all of the mistakes in the world… yet !

Please let me know via comments below if this is something you would be interested in. If you know of other people that might also enjoy please share this so I can get their comments also.

If you know anything about me you know I am a networking fool (some of you may put more emphasis on the fool part). Call me a sell out. Call me shameless. Call me a self-promoting sleazeball. But I like free stuff.

AllBusinessCards.com is giving away free sets of cards. Help a brother out and fill this out. I’ve never asked you for anything have I ? Yeah – didn’t think so.

Click here for the free biz card giveaway.

What is in it for you ? My love and undying loyalty. What will happen to you if you don’t. Not a damn thing.

Why I won't put my Twitter (or addresses) on my business card

    Thursday, April 9th, 2009

I attended a great local business conference the other day here in Oklahoma City. Afterward I received a followup email indicating that I should put my Twitter address on my card.

    Why would I do that?

As great as Twitter is it is FAR from the way I want people to communicate with me on a primary basis. I hand out business cards so you can communicate with after we meet in person. In my opinion Twitter is an amazingly inefficient way to “talk” to somebody. It is a great way to START a conversation. But if you are going to talk about anything at length or build a personal/business relationship take it off Twitter ASAP and get it on the phone or to email. As cute as 140 characters is you cannot get across any good or in depth information this way. If you and I were to talk this way face to face we’d get out about one sentence a piece. Tell me how great your day is in one sentence. Tell me how great your business or product is in one sentence. Most people would be challenged.

Am I dogging on Twitter? Far from it. If you look at the number of updates I have you will see that I cannot shut up on Twitter. Twitter is great for lite social chatting. Its use has gone well beyond the “What are you doing right now?” business model. But I also take a lot of my conversations to DM/Email/Phone very fast if I want any depth. If somebody says to me “let’s explore this opportunity more” my next message back is a DM with my phone number and/or email address. As a business you should be using this medium as a way to drive people to someplace where you can convert them (your store) or have a more extensive conversation with them (in person, phone, email). It should be your backup/support system of communication that drives people to better forms of communication.

    Twitter is good for:

Saying what you are doing. Short advertisements. Starting conversations. Getting out CollegeHumor links. Posting real time news for local areas. Arranging happy hours fast. All of these are general queries to the public at large that need short answers or links back to respond. Some of them are just broadcasts that need no response.

    Twitter is bad for:

Carrying on long or in depth conversations. Arranging social engagements. In depth customer support. Expressing emotionally how you feel about something. Making business deals. Giving in depth product information to potential customers. These are topics that need multiple sentences and multiple paragraphs to express your point.

I am curious as to what your thoughts are on this. Am I way off my rocker here?

(I also think this applies to the other networks FB/LI)

Update: Just to clarify – I’ll write it on the card if I am asked. That is why my new cards have a lot of white space on them. I am just not getting any new cards printed with that on there.

    Patrick Allmond: Bigger & Better

    Saturday, February 21st, 2009

I had blogs up in various places about various subjects. And I’ve owned the domain patrickallmond.com for awhile. To make it easier for the people I work with on a day to day basis I’ve decided to launch patrickallmond.com and its own independent entitiy and make it a launching point for all of the other projects that I am working on. Welcome.

What is the ONE skill that you have to sell?

    Monday, December 29th, 2008

You are a person that is blessed with many skills.

I know that Mr/Ms Reader without even meeting you or ever talking to you. I know that you have the ability to do some amazing things and do them well. It is just something that happens to us once we leave the womb. From the moment the sunlight hits ours eyes each of us starts getting great at something. And thankfully it is never the exact same thing for two different people.

As I network with people online and offline the one thing that I want to know when I meet them is what you have to bring to this relationship. If I meet you in person I will gladly tell you that I am a great communicator and I love anything involved in that field. I’ve owned my own business for a decade, and the one thing that I really enjoy is listening to what my customers want and making sure that they get it. I have to be able to communicate it back to them effectively. And if I screw it up, tell me. I will listen intently, repeat it back and make it right. But you don’t have to tell me twice.

But if somebody (like me) asked you (like I am) what is absolute ONE best skill you had what would it be and why are you so good at it?

    Let’s go back. Way Back.
