Guest Blogger: Cheryl Harrison of BeingCheryl.com

    Friday, February 5th, 2010

Our guest blogger today is none other than my good friend Cheryl Harrison from Columbus, Ohio. Cheryl is one of those cool friends that people make on the internet and that they have an instant connection with. Never mind the fact that she is 917 miles and 15 hours away from me. Never mind the fact that I have never met her in person. She is just a great upbeat lady who happens to be very sharp at what she does – Social Media. What makes her that much better is that she is engaged to get married later this year to a guy who is a pretty sharp dresser. I can see some good looking kids coming out of this union. Take a look at her Q&A below – and even that damn cool picture she made for me as part of this blog entry. Then follow her on Twitter and give her some love.

    ===

    1. What is the name of your blog:
Being Cheryl – which is what I do best – with the fun tagline, “I am a good idea.” (I also write for GreatestCityofAll.com and SyncCreative.com)
    2. What is your blog about:
Social media marketing tips and strategy, with a sprinkle of personal flavor.
    3. How long you have been blogging:
      Since early 2008
    4. How much time do you spend each week working on your blog:
      2-3 hours
    5. What was one of the first blogs that you read that you love:
The blog that inspired me to start blogging was Chris Brogan’s
    6. What three blogs do you read every single week:
I subscribe to more than 50 blogs that I try to read every day, but three of my favorites are Social Business Strategies, Altitude Branding and Social Media Explorer.
    7. What is the blog post you are the most proud of:
I’m proud of the concept of Fast Friends that started on my blog – using a blank calendar and social media reach to connect with new people in real life every day. I articulated it a little better the second time around.
    8. How has your blog helped you personally or professionally:
Immensely! I’ve gotten my last two jobs and all of my speaking engagements and freelance clients as a result of my online presence.
    9. What is something you hope to do with your blog that you have not done yet:
Redesign! My blog runs on WordPress and currently uses a free theme + design, which, while very visually interesting, isn’t custom and doesn’t best represent me.
    10. What is the best “do it” tip you have for a blogger that is start today:
Just that – do it. Don’t overthink it, don’t make excuses – just start writing!
    11. What is the best “never do it” tip you have for blogger that is starting today:

Don’t be afraid of blogging, but think before you click “publish.”

Do It Well, Do What You Want, and Get Paid!

    Thursday, February 4th, 2010

Earlier this week I discovered this chart below – and I have been obsessed with it ever since. I made it the backdrop for my dual screen system, and I need to make it the backdrop for my laptop soon. It represents something that I, you, and most of the people in the world fail to keep in focus. We get so hung up in getting that check on the 1st and 15th. We get so hung up in meetings. We get so hung up chasing after business opportunities that seem like they will make a lot of money when in reality a lot of money is not your true motivator. The chart is probably the picture that best represents my mindset for having this blog. I consider the man who created it brilliant. He may not have come up with the concept, but he made it very easy for us to ‘get it’ in about 15 seconds.

Please spread this around to as many people as possible. I am not the originator of this chart – his name is on the chart. But if I could I’d climb up to the highest room of the tallest tower (Love my Shrek) and hang a banner with this on it. It is just that powerful to me.

Guest Blogger: Keith Casey of Casey Software

    Friday, January 29th, 2010

We are on week three of our Friday morning guest posts here at StopDoingNothing. Last week we were lucky enough to have Michael Martine from Remarkablogger. This week we get the pleasure of Keith Casey from Casey Software. Keith is one of those great remote friends who I’ve learned a lot from but never met in person. He hails from the DC area and I’ve been lucky to know him for about 2-3 years. He recently left the self-employed world and is now gracing Blue Parabola every day with his presence.

    ===

What is the name of your blog

I currently blog at http://caseysoftware.com/blog and http://blueparabola.com/blog but CaseySoftware is my primary.

    What is your blog about

I tend to bounce around within technology topics. I develop in PHP, participate in a couple Open Source projects, and attend numerous tech events, so my posts reflect that. I’ve also started adding small business & entrepreneurship topics back into rotation after backing off of them for 2+ years.

How long you have been blogging

My first post was 02 December 2004 and I have ~720 posts out there.

How much time do you spend each week working on your blog (writing, design, etc)

Writing a post normally takes 45-60 minutes but I should probably spend another 5-10 minutes on it for editing. At present, I do almost no editing/review and it’s probably my biggest weakness. On average, I write 2/week though I’d like to raise that to three, so you do the math.

On the design front, my sites need an overhaul. I designed CaseySoftware in mid-2005 and have been too busy to worry about it ever since.

What was one of the first blogs that you read that you love

Joel on Software was the first blog I read regularly.

What three blogs do you read every single week

I cheat a little here. I read Planet PHP - http://www.planet-php.net/ – which aggregates much of the PHP community. On the more analytical yet not technical front, I read http://www.politicalmathblog.com/ regularly. Beyond that, I keep an eye out on topics that interest me via Google search and friends.

What is the blog post you are the most proud of

Oddly enough, the posts that I’m the most proud of have nothing to do with traffic. I happen to like “Twas the Night before Christmas” – http://caseysoftware.com/blog/twas-night-christmas – because it was fun to write.

How has your blog helped you personally or professionally

Writing regularly has helped me hone my writing skills. Quite often, my rough drafts of formal documents are received well. More importantly, as I’ve written more, I’ve been able to speak in front of groups more easily. And best of all, I’ve been able to use my blog as a platform for sharing/starting ideas even to the point

What is something you hope to do with your blog that you have not done yet

I always hoped to earn enough from ads to cover hosting, buy a toy occasionally, and otherwise be a non-trivial amount of my income. To date, I average enough for 2-4 cups of coffee each month. Not enough to retire, but I manage to cover my hosting.

What is the best “do it” tip you have for a blogger that is start today

Write regularly, even if it’s once a week. When you write, you organize your thoughts, open yourself to criticism, and get all the bad posts out of the way. ;)

What is the best “never do it” tip you have for blogger that is starting today

Never write to please other people. You can’t please everyone all the time, so don’t try. Find your passions and write on them. And yes, your passions will change over time.

SDN: New Web Show to launch

    Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

One my goals (remember – we have a page for that) has been to have a talk/review show of some sort – whether it be over the air or online. I will be taking the first step towards achieving this in the next week or two. Right now we are finalizing the initial location ( I am sure it will change ) and the hardware/software that will be needed to get it off the ground. We are thinking initially of 1/2 hour format to LiveStream. I really love the LiveStream platform because it lets people easily play previous content if the stream is not live. Ustream does something similar but I don’t believe it is as automatic as LiveStream.

I’ve received some great ideas of hardware/software from people on Twitter. Please keep your thoughts coming in the comments below or via Twitter/Facebook/LinkedIn/Telephone/Email/SnailMail/Crossbow/Carrier Pigeon.

Is there a social media rebellion in the works?

    Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

I read this great article last week about how people are popping a (virtual) cap in their own social media heads. Specifically it proposes the idea of going on hiatus every now and then – maybe a weekend here and there.  The entire point is brought home with this last paragraph. I have kept this in my draft email box all week and read it over and over. It is just a thought I really enjoy to absorb, and something that those of us that are extremely well connected online need to take to heart:

“As a communications tool and feedback loop, social media is a powerful thing. But as a time-waster, it has lifted the art of spending endless hours on nothing you can recall later as being useful or important to an entirely new level. Yes, I’ll be tweeting away next year. But hopefully, less prolifically. Like Helliker’s brother Keith, I find talking to people so much more rewarding than tweeting at them.”

Please take a look and let me know what you think in the comments below.

Video: I love to network, but relax Twitter fanboys!

    Monday, December 21st, 2009

It is really amazing to see all of the hype over “social networking/social media”. I do a lot of work in this area and one of the things I always try to do is look at things very realistically.

The tools people are calling “social media” are just simple communication tools. And some of them are not that good. But they do allow us to connect and communicate. We really need to relax on the hype, and get down to creating powerful business and personal relationships.

Sometimes my frustration vents out in different ways and people think I am a Social Media hater. This video will hopefully clarify my opinion. Mad props out to rexbarrett.us and rbbruce.com

    Have a great week!

Lost my compass, time to realign

    Sunday, December 20th, 2009

    Greeting my friend,

If you’ve read any of my past musings you will see that every now and then I talk about losing focus when it comes to life, goal setting, business, social media, personal development, etc. When that happens you just have to put on the brakes sometime and say whoa horsey. It is time for me to do that again. So if you are a friend, follower, or fan of mine here are the corrections/changes I will be making:

    1. I will be talking more about goal setting. I will probably even be getting up my list of goals and the progress I am making on each one. This is to drive/motivate you and to keep me in check. (UPDATE: See the bottom of this post. The list of goals is up.)

    2. I will be working hard to be less cynical. This goes very much for Social Media (threw up a little there) and the players in that field. Man there are a lot of annoying people in the world. And there are a lot of people over hyping something that is very simple and very powerful. If I am lying I am dying. But every second I spend on those people and what they have to say is a second I am not making forward progress for me, my family and my customers. That just has to stop.

    3. I’ll be taking my friends to task more on their goals and dreams. I’ve got a good friend William “RB” Bruce who has a very similar outlook on life that I do. You’ll see me kick his ass a lot more in public. And he will probably be kicking mine. Bring it on! I’ve got a couple of good local friends that I’ve had some in depth conversations with about what they want to do. I’ll be coming after them too.  If you ever share with me what you want out of life I’ll do everything I can to push you that way.

    4. I’ll be working harder on forming stronger connections with people on a deeper level. Screw this casual networking stuff. I want to know people and what they do more so I know who I can help, and who can help the people I know. I am a connector, always have been a great one,  but I can get better.

    5. I’ll be doing more video. I believe so strongly in video for the web, and I have for the longest time. I have a Flip Mino HD on me just about 24/7, but rarely take the time to fire it up. For that, I suck.

Feel free to take me to task when you don’t see my going where I say I should be going. Hop on twitter and bark at me. You can follow me on Twitter by clicking on this sentence.

    Have a great day!

    Have you ever lost focus?

    Saturday, April 18th, 2009

Do you ever wake up one more morning and just wondering what are you doing here, and where are you going next?

Recently it feels like I have been doing that more and more. There are places I’ve wanted to be in life, and goals I’ve wanted to knock out. And I am not making steady progress getting there. There are some distractions recently which have really thrown me for a loop. The distractions may be anywhere from a minute to a month, but slowly they have put me behind schedule in life. And that is darn frustrating.

But with these feelings I also realize that recognizing this issues are half of the battle. I know it now. I know I am off track. And consciously knowing will allow me to make the course corrections I need to make to get back on track. Minute by minute the ship is coming back in line with the originally planned course. I go to bed and wake up with a sense of purpose and satisfaction knowing that I’ve made steps in the right direction. Every day is just that – little tiny steps in the right direction.

Has this ever happened to you? What did you do to get back on track?

Thanks to those that came to class

    Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

A quick thanks to all of those that showed up for class at Francis Tuttle NW this morning. We had a great turnout and I know we have a huge interest in more beginner classes as well as some more advanced classes.

From what I understand the webcam cutout after the first break, but the ustream audio and chatroom were still going. We will work on that and getting the powerpoint online to make it easier for our remote viewers to keep up next time. Technology is moody – I don’t care what they say.

    XO – Patrick
