Five Things You Can Do Right Now To Increase Website Traffic

Getting More WordPress Traffic
Getting More WordPress Traffic

What is the best sign that you are making progress in the online marketing world? It should always be the number of conversions. And by conversion I am talking about two things: How many people signed up for your email list, and how many people checked out using your shopping cart.

But online marketing (like all marketing) is based on a funnel. You have to get A LOT of people into the top of the funnel to get anybody out of the bottom. The very top of your funnel comes from the number of website visitors. So one of the goals of any great online marketing program is to get as many people to your website as possible by any means necessary.

Take any (or all) of these actions now to immediately increase website traffic: .

  1. Create a new blog post. The search engines rank all organic content by two factors: Relevancy and Recency. Most people are great at the relevancy part, but it is really easy to become a slacker in the recency department. All things being equal, the business who as a website that changes (via blog posts) more often will always rank higher in the search engine. In addition to ranking higher their site will also be scanned more often by the search engines. You should be laying out an editorial calendar and publishing content your website no less than once a week. This is hard to do (look at my site) but extremely important. So as soon as you finish reading my blog post you should go post a new one of your own. Don’t come up with any excuses. Just do it.
  2. Comment on 5 other blogs. Your blog is only as popular as the number of links that are sent your way. The temporary one from social media are great, but you want those nice, long-term, juicy links that come from other content-based websites. One of the easiest ways to pay attention to what other bloggers in your industry are saying, and then offering a relevant comment in the comment area. The nice part about this is that most comment area have a place for you to list your site. Have you ever had WordPress comment spam? That is what happening. People are leaving WordPress comment spam by the thousands to get as many back links as possible. So go hunt down five blogs that you like right now and leave a useful comment. Then watch your traffic spike. Then come back here and thank me 🙂
  3. Join Triberr and build your tribe. Are there fellow bloggers that publish such great content that you know you are going to tweet it out? Wouldn’t it be nice if there was a system that made that as easy as possible? Welcome to Triberr. This is a great service created by the infamous Dino Dogan that makes sharing content that you were going to share anyways as easy as possible. It is like having your own personal news syndication network. When you create content you have a guaranteed audience. How big is that audience? With the right tribe it could be in the millions. If you want to get started with Triberr drop me a comment here or on Twitter account @patrickallmond. I might have a tribe that would be a good fit for you. Whenever I use Triberr properly on my website I see my traffic skyrocket.
  4. Join, post and participate in a forum about your industry. This has three benefits. 1) You get to hang around your peers and learn/grow with them 2) If you ever have any content on your blog relevant to a conversation thread you can drop in a backlink to your site 3) Almost all forums allow you to have a customized post signature. With that post signature you can drop in a link back to your site. You’d be surprised how many clicks I get from all the forums that I have participated in over the years. They are great for long-term, high quality back links.
  5. Push your social media followers to your website. If you are a business then you should always be looking for ways to push visitors back to your website. As fun as it is to post pictures and share information, all of that social media participation does not put food on the table. Getting leads back your site, getting them the participate in your OWN platform, and getting them to buy is what makes it rain. You should be looking for a way to drop a link to good content on your site at least 1-2 times a day.

I’ll swear on a bag of beef jerky (and I love my beef jerky) that all of these tips work wonders and will increase website traffic. So what are you waiting for? Get moving and get that website traffic flowing

Creating something easy is hard. Do it anyways.

I made this discovery as I sat here trying to redesign the Focus Consulting And Training home page.

Whenever I visit a website I expect to be able to find what I need to find within two clicks. If the site is really good it should take me zero clicks or at max one. If it takes more than about five I end up frustrated. With as many great web designers out there as we have this should not be an issue any more.

I started looking at our own site and realized that I was not happy with our home page. I wanted it to be simple. I wanted someone to not have to think. Just come to the Focus website and say “Oh that is what they do. Cool. I want to buy it”. I’ve been working on this all weekend now (Holiday weekend) . It is really a challenge to figure out how to say what you do in as few words possible.

Right now please take the time to look at your own site and marketing materials. It would be even better if you had 10 trusted friends look at it. Ask for a good harsh critique on everything: Layout, width, color, grammar, spelling, etc. Learn about A/B testing and multi-variant testing. If you don’t know how to A/B or multi-variant test your content on your site then contact us and we’ll show you how. It is one of the services we offer.

Strive to always make your message and your site as simple as possible. You will have a lot of drive bys, but the people that really get it and need exactly what you are selling will stick around and open up their wallets for you. I promise.

Would you like my candid opinion on your site? Please leave your site name/url in the comments below and I’ll look at it for you. It will take me no longer than 120 seconds to form an opinion about your site. Your potential customers spend even less time than I will. Things that make you go hmmmm.

What are the most important factors to get a site to rank highly?

The effort it takes to get your site to rank highly organically is a long and dedicated process. This is not something that can be done in a day or week – it takes a commitment and unless you have the time and resources, a long term engagement with an SEO expert.

This list is a little old but the information on it has not changed over time. So from the Top 5 Search Ranking Factors, let’s do a quick review:

  1. Keyword Focused Anchor Text from External Links -The most important factor that determines how important you are is how important other people think you are. You need people to refer to you as the expert on a subject. In the real world it is called word-of-mouth. In the internet world it is called an inbound link from one site that does the TRUSTING to a second site which is the TRUSTED. But for the link to have real impact it must also say what the TRUSTED site is trusted for. This is called the Anchor Text. So if you want to link to Focus Consulting about Social Media calling the link “Focus Consulting” is OK. But calling the link “Focus Consulting – Social Media Consultant to the Stars in Oklahoma City” is pure gold. When you get a link from another site to your site make sure it references what you want to be found for, not just your company name. Anchor Text is the name of the game.
  2. External Link Popularity – This is a numbers game – plain and simple. He who has 1000 links to their site will beat he who has 10 or 100. There is no shortcut to get your numbers up. A lot of hard work over a long period of time. Hint: Ask every past customer to link to you.
  3. Diversity of Link Sources – Look at #2. Now back to #2. Now back to me. Make sure those 1000 links inbound to your site comes from as many different places as possible. 1000 links from 200 sites are more valuable than 1000 links from 3 sites (i.e. 333 links coming in from each site). It is OK to get multiple links in from a single site. But try to keep it to less than 10 per site.
  4. Keyword use anywhere in the <title> tag – The <title> tag tells the user what the page is about. This is a very simple thing to fix but it is amazing how many projects we take on where even this basic step has not been done. Bonus super secret Focus tip: Make every page on your site have a unique page title. Same goes for the meta information about the web page.
  5. Trustworthiness of the Domain Based on Link Distance from Trusted Domain – The search engines trust what the trustworthy trusts. Huh? There are website all over the internet that come and go every minutes – fly-by-night operations. These are not trustworthy websites. They were not here yesterday, they won’t be here tomorrow, and they have very little to contribute to society. And then there are website that have been around for 20 years. They are huge and are very popular. Example: Government (.gov) and education (.edu) websites always fall in this category. When you are working on number 1, 2 and 3 above any link from a trustyworthy site that links directly to you has a very highly value for your website. So try to get as many links as possible from the big dogs.

Forward this to as many friends as possible. These are the basics of SEO that people seems to forget.
