I love technology. It allows me to do things like sit in the Oklahoma City airport and blog.
(I am headed out to L.A. on business. If you are an L.A. blogger and want to get together for coffee and a chat let me know).
I am pretty excited about travelling today. The thought of landing in L.A. and wandering around my old stomping ground always puts a smile on my face. It was not always like this.
From when I started my business (1998) to about three years ago (2004) I did nothing but travel. The consulting engagements I had were never in my home city of Oklahoma City. I travelled back and forth across the country weekly. And I even did a 5 week stint in Spain. It got to the point where I would wake up in the middle of the night and walk into stuff because I had no clue where I was and what time it was. I really started to dislike the travelling consultant gig. But hey… it did get me to the Aadvantage Platinum level at American Airlines. Last time I checked my account I had around 650,000 miles with them.
But then when I was able to land a grow a local contract I started to miss the travel. It was almost too easy to get up and go back and forth to the same location for weeks and months on end. I also started to miss the people at the airport. I know that seems silly, but these were people I was used to seeing a weekly basis. I knew them, thier schedules, their childrens names, etc. As I sit here in the airport now and look around I don’t recognize any of these people.
So I have come to the conclusion that I would not mind travelling some more. Maybe once every month or two. This is a good time for this revelation also because I am in a position to start to really grow my business. I have four people working for me - three developers and one business consultant - that really know their stuff. This will allow me to get my head out of the coding business and into the business part of the business (if that makes sense). I feel very responsible to the people that work for me. They and their families are depending on the growth of my company. I’ll gladly travel if it is what is needed for me to fulfull my obligation to them.
Have you travelling recently? If you are a road warrior or homebody (both extremes) I’d like to know what your thoughts are too much/too little travel.
xo,
Patrick

I wish I could travel more. I’m confined to my home but my university begins shortly so it will be some difference for me. I did not go out for a vacation in this 5 years or so.
Give it some time. You will get there. It really opens your eyes. If more people travelled and saw the world we’d probably all get along alot better.
